這些英文小說都是得金牌獎的小說,雖然是青少年讀物,但他的故事架構很完整,看似平鋪直敘的文章,其實有深厚的意義在其後,看完HOLES,我已深深愛上這個小說了!!


Holes
(1) I like the ending of Holes. Because I think its structure is good. At first, we didn’t know

why Stanley has a run of bad luck. And he isn’t the thief of that pair of sneakers? Why he

finally be caught in Camp Green Lake? Initially, I thought the story is strange. It seems like the

fate of teaser. I thought children in the camp had bad characters, but they just like playing tricks

on others and naughty. Like Armpit, because of his muscular build. So others who don’t know

about him will get fight with him if Armpit wants to protect himself. And the next one is X-ray,

at first he threatened Stanley to give the gold tube to him. But he didn’t hurt Stanley. I think

he wouldn’t hurt Stanley if Stanley cheated he didn’t find anything. In my opinion, Zero is the

most special person in this story. At beginning, he said nothing to everybody except Stanley.

And I think Stanley is a good boy, because of his good temperature.


He taught Zero how to read and how to write with patience. Although Stanley always blames

every unfortunates to his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing great-great-grandfather, but he

wouldn’t do something bad and blame everything to him. He still has a kind-hearted,

considering characters. I think the author want to explain a thing – although the real life is full

of difficulties, however, we still have a kind heart to face. We can’t conspire with the evil power.

Justice will stand our side at the end.


(2) I think the author tries to explain there has connections between everything.I think it’s a

coincidence that Stanley was sent to Camp Green Lake. If the Yelnats wasn’t put on curse,

Stanley wouldn’t be hit by sneakers. If Stanley wasn’t caught in Camp Green Lake, he

wouldn’t meet Zero. If he didn’t meet Zero, he wouldn’t know the truth and the curse

would not be solved. When Stanley determined to find Zero, his family curse was to be solved.

They saw the Big Thumb and climbed on it, Zero was too tired to walk. So Stanley carried Zero

to the top of the mountain. When Stanley found there are lots of bugs around them, he thought

that there has water. And they found Sam’s onion field, they ate them to stop hunger. They

cheated about their life, Stanley found who put on the curse to his family. He found everything

changed, Zero told him that he stole the sneakers. But Stanley didn’t get angry, he had solved

the curse. When they got back and dug out the treasure box, there were lots of yellow-spotted

lizards on it. Because yellow-spotted lizards hate Sam’s onion, so they didn’t get hurt. It’s

doomed they ate onions and Stanley sang the “If only” to Zero. The curse was solved because

Stanley had finished things Mrs. Zeroni asked, so they can get back successfully and Zero found

there had Stanley’s name on the treasure box. I think Stanley was lucky because he found the

gold tube. If he didn’t find that gold tube, he would not give it to X-ray. Stanley would not be

taken to Warden’s house, and he wouldn’t know about Kate Barlow. And it was a great

coincidence that treasure was in that hole.
